Zachary’s 1st Birthday Party

A delayed post as always!

Sooo where shall I begin… Basically the party was a huge success alhamdulillah. It really was a fun and happening one. Initially we thought of organizing BBQ with family at home but there was this one fine day that my family had lunch at Hotel Bangi Putrajaya (previously Hotel Equatorial Bangi) and my mum casually got an idea and suggested for the birthday party to be held there. We really like our dim sum/lunch there and are definitely familiar with the hotel.

January is a celebratory month because we have these special dates in line:

3 January – My big brother’s birthday

4 January – My sister and brother in law’s anniversary

20 January – My brother in law’s birthday

22 January – Zachary’s birthday

27 January – My parents’ anniversary

Because of these celebrations we thought of holding a more special get together with family members with the spotlight angled at and for Zachary’s 1st Birthday party. My dad approved of the idea and my sister took the lead in securing a room at the hotel for the party.

We always know this hotel offers really good Chinese food at a fairly reasonably price. That said we were very very happy with the food service that night and it was a good feeling to hear our family members passing compliments on how much they enjoyed the food. Alhamdulillah. In terms of the room review, I must say we couldn’t ask for more. Very good room in terms of size and layout! They have a number of rooms that can accommodate from 20-100 guests. Ours was for 50 people and it could even fit a giant sized bouncy castle.

Speaking of bouncy castle, yes we rented a bouncy castle for the kids to play and it was the best decision made because all they did was jump and slide throughout the party (gave all parents the chance to eat and mingle freely). For anyone who’s looking for bouncy castle, you can just search #bouncycastlemalaysia on Instagram and you shall find about 4-5 business pages that provide rent services for bouncy castles. Currently the rent price is between RM350-500 depending on the size for 3-4 hours rental time.

Moving on to party planner, we opted for Wondermamacandybuffet again (my sister’s baby shower’s party planner). As this party was more for kids, we made sure to have the customised dessert buffet table. And speaking of theme.. The theme for the night was ‘football and jersey’. We notified everyone of this and thank you dearest family for coming in jerseys that night.

I’m about to share photos now! A few of them are from my own collections while the rest are from our photographer for the night, Azim Sharif. My sister got his contact number from her friend and you can search @azimsharif on Instagram shall you like his work!

World’s coolest grandmother award for our dearest Grandma. My 75 year old grandma really shocked everyone that night. Thanks Che for coming in jersey!

Urmm yeah uncles.. We get it that you’re all young too.

As you can see, we were wearing different football team jerseys. I have to say that a lot of us was in Arsenal jerseys but Liverpool had to win that night since the birthday boy was wearing Liverpool jersey (thank you Uncle Azrul for Zachary’s jersey). Too young to decide according to his uncles but a son’s gotta support what the dad supports huh haha.
Before I end the post, I want to credit myself (ahem ahem) first for both Birthday and Anniversary cakes. Anniversary cake turned out nice but Zachary’s cake didn’t turn out too well. I still slap my forehead whenever I see the uneven fondant layer on Zachary’s cake but I’m happy that I didn’t give up at least. Fondant dear.. you were super difficult to deal with.

So yes, that’s it about Zachary’s 1st Birthday Party! Zachary, if ever you’re reading this in the future, I just want you to know how very lucky you are to be blessed with wonderful parents, grandparents and family members. Mama Ya prays you grow up to be an amazing amazing person inside and out just like they are in shaa Allah.

Happy growing up baby boy.

Kakak’s Birthday/Baby Shower

I told my sister I wanted to write this post closer to her due date and her response was “What? Basi la cerita ni nanti. I don’t understand how your mind works sometimes dik, you should write now” –.–

June 2015

Before I start writing about the afternoon tea party which I’m sure everyone knows about (due to heavy pictures load on your Facebook news feed and Instagram timeline), I would like to share a little story about how we first found out that my sister was (is) pregnant.

There were I think 2 false alarms for her pregnancy before the third correct alarm. She got married in January 2014 and she made herself clear that she and my BIL would only start considering having a baby after at least a year or so because they were both not ready yet. That was fair enough because my sister still had another year to go for her Phd studies. And so, a year passed by and I remember returning to Bristol first for my final year exams before she did 2 weeks after for her Viva. It was not all so different yet the first few days until she started getting hot flushes and constant anxieties + restlessness. We thought it was nothing much and then there we were planning for what we referred to as our final ‘Sisters’ Europe Trip’ before we flew home for good. It was such a last minute plan and that got our parents saying No in the beginning and decision overturned after we convinced them that ‘Ma pa, if we don’t go now, when else to go.’ Hehe.

Few days after, we were already in Italy and that was when things really got fishy. She was constantly hungry and it meant the impatient ‘I want food NOW’ Nur. She also could not stop saying how tiring the whole trip was… = stressed Nadia. The trip was of course fun nevertheless.

Our flight back to Malaysia was 2 days after our return to Bristol and then there was I being such an aunty telling my mom ‘Ma, it’s really strange this time. I think she’s really pregnant’. My mom did not want to be so hopeful and let my words pass. I think it was a week after that my mom and I helped my sister buy the pregnancy test kit from the nearby pharmacy. My sister came back home after work feeling all nervous in all its essence and she performed the test. I was in my room that time feeling as agitated as her and then she called out ‘Adik adik, come here’ ‘What kak, what?’ ‘I think I’m pregnant. Look at those lines’ ‘Huh what line what line are you talking about?’

IMG_6440 (1)

My sister’s hands were too shaky already that time and then I took the instructions flyer and the lines made sense all of the sudden. ‘Ya Allahhhh alhamdulillah, you are pregnant!!’ I got out from the toilet straight to my mum and said ‘Ma in shaa Allah you will really be a grandmother!!’ and god I think that was the first time I ever saw my mum jump – too excited eh ma? Hehehe.

November 2014

29 weeks pregnant already! My sister always used to mention about wanting a baby shower and my mum being her traditional self said NO. I convinced her that our definition of baby shower is not actually baby shower, it is more of a simple small get together between friends with nice decorations. She still was not very happy and then we considered ‘Solat Hajat/Melenggang Perut’. My sister and I however read about Melenggang Perut and did not really enjoy what we read and so we called the idea off. We discussed further of what to do and then I told my sister to just leave it all to me. We agreed to have a small personal event between just her and her friends but without her knowing all the details. Told our mum about the idea of which she agreed to and our dad decided to have a small solat hajat at our house with few Habibs. That solved it all because we would want a solat hajat ceremony first before anything as my parents always remind us to first do the priority before anything.

I texted my BIL that the Melenggang Perut/Solat Hajat was not happening anymore and I wanted to organise a small event for kakak and friends. My BIL did not really favour the idea and wanted at least both sides of the families to be around and so we both collaborated for the event. We targeted around 30pax before our families cancelled on us and said we should just carry on with just friends. That reduced the number of pax to 20 and I did half of the invitations and my BIL did another half.

Invitations sorted out (had some disagreements with my BIL before it was all good again) and then there were ‘Venue, Food, Decorations and Cake’ to attend to. My BIL initially opted for Double A Cafe as the owners are his friends but the price was a bit too high with what we would be given and so we changed venue 2 days before the event. Thanks to my BIL because he managed to secure Bistro 160 at Grand Millennium Hotel KL and we received a much better deal there. We had to inform the guests of the venue change and we were lucky because everyone was just so lovely with their ‘still yes!’ replies.

I sorted out decorations and I did what we all do best now – search through Instagram hashtags. I found two planners but the first one was already booked and I was lucky the other one wanted to service us. The result was hmmmmm a truly satisfied customer!

Amazing job done, Thank you Kak Nurul *insert flying kiss and love is in the air emoticons*! I really did not say much to her except I wanted baby blue/white for the theme colour. That also involved changing my order from initially a candy buffet table decoration (for Double A Cafe) to personalised individual pax decorations. Really great that my BIL sent me pictures of what baby shower for afternoon tea party usually looks like or I would have not amended my order otherwise. For those looking for event planner, you can search on Instagram @wondermamacandybuffet. They do catering services too!

The food consisted of the desserts trays + scones and we had tea or coffee for beverages. The whole team especially Nia were incredibly friendly and their service was first class. My BIL was one happy customer.

Birthday cake was by again one of the bakers I found on Instagram @suezcakez. I recommend going to Kak Sue as she is so fast with replies and is generous too, thank you again Kak Sue!

Next in line would be pictures of my beautiful preggy sister with her husband and friends (and me and CP). MP, if you are reading this – I am so sorry I did not call to invite you, Abang Aiman and Ayyash. It was really because we did not want to trouble you as you just got back from Langkawi and to make another trip to KL we thought would have been so tiring.

Kakak and her Hubby

Kakak and Bondi

Kakak and Kak Nini (both pregnant mommies to be/best friends)

Kakak and Kak Lyn

Kakak and BIL with the newly married couple Kak Mariam and Abang Affan

And then they envied the picture and took back our spotlight (mommies to be won of course hehe)

MP we definitely missed you!

Alhamdulillah, it was a wonderful wonderful birthday/baby shower afternoon tea party and it was really satisfying to hear and see how happy my sister was with the whole thing. Kakak, BIL and I would like to thank you so much friends for spending your afternoon with us and we apologise again should there be anything you found not right!

Thank you thank you thank you, May Allah bless us all <3

Happy International Women’s Day

Stealing almost one hour off already from my dissertation work hours to complete my Swiss Travel Post and this one too! My sister told me some of her friends sent their Women’s Day wishes to us and that just got to me that I must blog about this no matter what.

Ladies, we are such amazing creations, each one of us, and let’s be grateful for all that we have around us and within us. I would like to say that you are all very beautiful people and never once make yourself feel like you are not. Put a smile on that pretty face everyday, cherish every second no matter how bad things may seem to be going or coming your way, appreciate each person that comes into your life even if they don’t make you happy because every person you meet is a blessing and let’s enjoy growing up.

These pictures were taken at Keukenhoff, Amsterdam in May 2014. I chose them because women and flowers are inseparable, are they not? Okay fine, a little vain I know.

And now gorgeous pink tulips, just for you..

Happy International Women’s Day, lovely ladies *group hug*.

#syazwanibazil wedding Part 6 – Official Videos

Avicenna Studio worked on producing the 2 videos of the events. Happy clients, thank you Avicenna.

Video 1: Proposal + Solemnisation

The Proposal video was created by the groom and embedded into the solemnisation video. He proposed to the bride while on their holiday trip at Exmoor National Park. Pictures courtesy of Nazmee Mazlan, our little brother, who joined in the fun and took shots from some hidden spots.

Video 2: Groom’s side reception. Theme: Black Tie

It’s now time I disclose ‘Surprise 3’.

And yes, Surprise 3 was the performance delivered by my BIL’s long time best friend (12 years) at the wedding reception. He serenaded the crowd with the song – ‘Nothing’s gonna change my love for you’.

My all time favourite song by George Benson. You have wonderful friends kakak and abang Bazil. Friends for keep definitely.

#syazwanibazil wedding Part 5 – Reception on the groom’s side

This beautiful beautiful Black Tie themed wedding reception that took place at Hilton KL was mostly BIL’s hard work. I seldom hear men handling weddings, they usually leave them to their moms and sisters. My BIL was truly an exception *bows to him*, he had everything planned well and even prepared a few surprises for his wife and now, I shall again let these magnificent pictures do the speaking for me.
Photographer: Daniel Zain Photography. Thank you Daniel. Instagram – @danielzain
 So creative!
 Beautiful piece Innai Red!

 And action!

Surprise 4 (skipping surprise 3 for a reason)
Awesome awesome surprise. The lights in the ballroom suddenly turned off and the emcee closed the event by ushering everyone to leave the ballroom and then guess what greeted us all.
 Too brilliant.
He kept the surprises from everyone and especially from the person he wanted to surprise most and only his family knew about this. Every element was very well done BIL *thumbs up*.
I think my selfie picture already implied the continuation of Part 4. Yes, my dad – the problem solver, made me come home to make everyone (mama, kakak and myself too) happy. It was a challenging life for me I got to admit. I arrived in Malaysia on the 10th morning and 11th night was the reception and I took the 12th morning flight and got into Bristol safe and sound on 12th night. 13th was my final paper and alhamdulillah, I got an A and a B for both the papers. Those on flight studying did work with the help of my loved ones in Malaysia and in UK. And the cabin crew too for feeding me well (at one point, I got so shy to enter the plane because I knew I would be with the same crew hehe). But if I may say, never in my life that I felt so knackered. I didnt share my pictures in this post because I simply looked horrible that night. One of my cousins saw me from afar as I walked behind my sister and asked the other cousin ‘what happened to yaya’ and one of my aunties pulled me to the side and told me ‘you look so tired’. I was but I was also happy that I made it. I could witness and attend to my mom’s request to be there and also be my sister’s maid of honour on her big day. And really, I think that was all that mattered. Thank you papa for the idea and on top of everything, thank you God.
Now to this couple,
It has now been almost a year that you’ve been married to each other and your families are happy to see you doing well. Disagreements and arguments will not pass but it’s how you handle them that are key to harmony. We feel blessed that your hubby doesn’t take you away from us kakak. We still feel you’re always around and it’s thanks to the coolest and easy going son in law/brother in law.
May it forever remain that way, May Allah always keep your marriage safe and best wishes from us.

#syazwanibazil wedding Part 4 – Akad Nikah & Reception Bride’s side

On 4.1.14 after Isya’, this beautiful couple officially became husband & wife.

I still recall how teary I got that night. It was one of those touching moments where it just really hit you. ‘My sister is married, I’m going to lose her, she’s not going to be around as much, who’s going to hang out with me and mama’ and all sort of things. I guess I really do love my sister. Of course I do. Everyone does. I’m not going to write a lot because I believe the pictures below will do the talking.

 BIL – nervous much?
The saksi/witnesses – My uncle and abang. Adik, you look stressed out here. Hehe.
Make up by Kak Saidatulnisa. Quiet person but lovely and talented.
Jo, great job here! Follow @iamjoeyjohari on instagram. He’s a great photographer.

Pure love for the pelamin. Thank you KS Entourage.
 With the cousins.
Handsome huh.

 Abang’s friends
 Abang and Sara
Mama’s side of the family. Mama has 10 siblings so big family there but some were missing in this picture.
Papa’s side of the family. Fun gang always! Some were missing in the picture too.

 My pretty little cousin.
 Handsome cousins.
UPM tutors – kakak’s future colleagues.
My high school friends – i love you girls.
 Kakak’s high school friends.
 Will always love you kakak.
Alhamdulillah for a blessed wedding with wonderful crowd and before I start writing Part 5, I’m going to make a confession.. I did tear up the next morning because my sister wasn’t going to be around for a few days as the newly married couple (that time) was off to Langkawi with the international friends. I felt like I was losing her already so the tears were fair. That wasn’t long though as I had a flight to catch that night and an exam was waiting for me already. A little story as I got into the plane.
‘Cik Nadia? I dont reckon you recognise me but I was there at your sister’s wedding last night’. I guess I looked pretty lost that time so he continued ‘I’m your neighbour by the way’. I was still in the same state but said ‘oh yes my neighbour! Hope you enjoyed the wedding, thank you for attending!’ ‘Very much welcome and I did indeed, it was a beautiful wedding’. He excused himself and then it finally clicked to me that it was my steward neighbour. Touched down London safe 13 hours after and mama confirmed it to me and said he lives next door. Mama’s quite close to the mom and the steward is the son in law of our neighbour. Okay, cool mom!
I mentioned I had 2 exams with 1 coursework in the previous post. I did finish up my coursework in December so that one was no problem. The problem was my 2nd exam which fell on the 13th. And the reception on the groom’s side was on the 11th. My sister was insisting that I must come back for the reception. Initially she was okay about me not being there but she suddenly got all sulky as the date neared. I had no clue of what to do that time. So the problem solver came into action. And the story about it will be in Part 5..

#syazwanibazil wedding Part 3

Disclaimer: Part 3 will be all about friends!

My sister and BIL studied at Imperial College for their Masters Degree. Same course, same class, same nationality. How could they not fall in love.. and while I just shared this I will also share the story that never gets old (to my sister at least). She said that they first met during orientation day. Everyone had to carry like a little banner/name tag that of course had their names on. So apparently, she heard a voice of a handsome tall man that said ‘Nur Syazwani Mazlan, are you Malaysian?’ that got her turning her head like those you see in tv commercial for shampoo. And apparently again, my sister said that it was love at the first sight for my BIL………………………………………………………

Oh well..

So anyway, studying together would mean you would be in the same circle of friends. And when two people get together and it works out until marriage and forever in shaa Allah, they would want their good friends to be around them. Same thing for my sister and BIL. Their friends from all over the European and Asian continents came down to Malaysia to witness their big day. My sister did her degree in Queen Mary and that meant more friends and my sister also studies in UoB now so more friends again.

The UoB friends arrived one day before the big day and we fetched them from the airport and straight to the hotel and at night we brought them to KLCC for dinner. I told my sister ‘Do you realise you’ll be married in less than 24 hours kak?’. Before we left, our family and relatives from Kelantan were already crowding the house so I think my sister did.

Ruby, myself and MP
The UoB group
We got home by 11.30pm with full tummies and I forced my sister to sleep because she needed it and we were going to have an early start for rehearsal with emcee, parents, bridesmaids/dulang girls and the usherers from KS team. The groom’s side rehearsal was planned by the KS team to be later in the evening, lucky them!
Morning came fast enough and kakak was so excited that she got to see all her dulang girls! Mira and Madina who arrived safely from Kazakhstan, Tharry and Bondi who reserved their whole day for their friend, Kak Niniey (kakak’s longest best friend since high school and we are also somewhat related), the pies who are always there through thick and thin and of course the UoB ladies!
Me.. I was excited to see Kak Adibah Noor! The friendliest, talented, awesome, witty and most natural emcee ever. My dad really particularised the choice of emcee because we needed one who has all the talents that Kak Adibah has to ensure balance and control of the crowd. She just touched down from Jakarta and made her way straight to the hotel – full respect to her as she was being really professional and did not one bit show the tired side of her and just carried on giving brilliant idea while joking around with my parents and the dulang girls as she wrote her scripts.
You were amazing that night kak Adibah, thank you!
 KS briefing the dulang girls!
 Madina, Ruby, Bondi and CP
Kak Nini, Lily, Tharry and Madina
The rehearsal went smooth and since it was quite an early start, kakak told her friends to get their rest and myself, pies, Kak Nini and kakak made our ways to kakak’s honeymoon suite, a special treat to the couple, courtesy of the hotel. And kakak got a little surprise from her best friend…

So sweet of kak Nini, the cake was delicious!

Kakak requested me to also upload these pictures of her and BIL’s awesome friends enjoying Malaysian food.. (Who are of course my friends too now). Your friends are my friends kak, my friends are my friends. Haha kidding kakak, love you.
Banana leaf with the Imperial group + BIL’s friend when in Oundle
Hello Durian King if you’re reading this.
Had to share this one – best friends forever. Andrii in BIL’s baju Melayu at majlis kesyukuran.
My sister was unhappy with the yesterday’s dress fitting pictures so she sent me these pictures.
I think my choices are really gorgeous but just not in her eyes… But hope you’re happy now kakak *insert smiley face*.

#syazwanibazil wedding Part 2

Part 2 will be first about malam berinai for my sister. Nothing formal just my sister, my cousin and I.

The inai person is really really talented if anyone is looking for inai person. Her instagram is @faizahalim and she now has 7k followers. I asked her while she was doing the inai ‘so have you ever made a mistake’ and she replied ‘alhamdulillah never yet so far in all the years I do this job’.

And part 2 will also be about the small majlis kesyukuran, keberkatan, marhaban and doa selamat that my dad insisted on organising since the first time the wedding idea was voiced out and just 2 days before the wedding, it happened.

Alhamdulillah for the honourable and special guests acceptance and agreements to be present on the day. It was a big blessing to my dad especially and the whole family. May Allah bless them for making time for us all and may Allah bless my dad for the hard work he took to realise his dream.

Our dad always reminds us that no matter how amazing we try to do anything, we must first try our best to get Allah’s blessings and in shaa Allah, He will smoothen things for us. Thank you pa for this event.

#syazwanibazil wedding Part 1

Successfully submitted my two big QS courseworks yesterday *phew*. I usually try my best to have my work ready at least a day prior to the deadline but guess who finished her work just 6 hours before this time.. But alhamdulillah for completing and I hope all goes well, in shaa Allah!

So I’ve been meaning to blog about #inserttheabovetitle for a long time and here I am today bringing my mind to the memories of my sister’s big day(s). The getting hitched decision came when were about to return to the UK for 2013 university term. That was umm, late August 2013, yeap.. Everyone panicked with my father’s decision, I mean we all knew the marriage date would definitely be in January 2014 but when it was finally finalised, God.. Wasn’t that just a serious deal. My sister and I straight away put the bride-to-be hat and maid-of-honour hats on and our dad and mom put the easiest hats on instead – finance/location/food/invite guests. Hehe.
My sister has always and always loved weddings apart from make up which made it a bonus as she knew where to start first and who to look for. The major ones were:
1st in list – Location
2nd in list – Wedding planner
3rd in list – Wedding dresses
Location wasn’t as hard as my dad had either Pullman and Marriott in Putrajaya in mind. Pullman could accommodate only up to 200 guests and so Hello Marriott Putrajaya although that meant them  giving us the whole 1,000 pax ballroom when all that we needed was only half of that. Hehe. My dad  considered KL too as the location but he knew Putrajaya would be much closer to us which was a blessed idea honestly. We had to go to the hotel a lot throughout the course of the wedding for food tasting, discussions with hotel manager, payments, hotel room arrangements for the groom’s family and the bride’s friends and all the little little things. Further to that, our relatives live around the same proximity so another kudo point there!
So now 1st list sorted and then came the 2nd one. This one, oh God. Took quite some time.. Luckily again, my sister had a vague idea of which planners to consider and after the many meet ups successful and unsuccessful ones (available but unbelievably pricey, available but dad didnt agree, not available because someone else had the same wedding date), my sister made a final list and brought it to my dad and after hearing comments both she and I made about each wedding planner (that time my dad and mom trusted me more) o yeah, decision arrived and ‘KS Entourage’ got everyone happy.
KS is such a nice nice person. We went to his showroom at Hotel Istana and were immediately touched with his humble nature. He handed us the portfolio of the beautiful weddings that he made happen with the help of his assistants who were just as kind as him. When we told him where the wedding would take place, he took that happily as he had done numerous weddings there and one of the known ones was Lisa Surihani and Yusry’s akad nikah ceremony. I guess my dad liked the comments we made about KS so wedding planner checked! I still remember what my sister said to KS during the first meeting.
“We need to impress Nadia because she’s the reporter of the family”. What was that supposed to mean huh kak?
While looking for the above, my sister had to also decide on wedding dresses and so again after going to several boutiques, she chose to trust Innai Red to design her dresses. The shop was a bit far for us, it’s in Plaza Damas Mont Kiara but no worries for my sister because she had a driver to drive her around for all the wedding related errands *points to maid of honour hat*.
It was then just a week before our flight back to UK and alhamdulillah the family and us were happy that we managed to sort out the major ones including wedding invitation cards. My sister made it clear to everyone that she would only return to Malaysia 3 weeks before the wedding date and they were supportive enough to say “don’t you worry, you got us to handle everything, we will prepare the necessary timeline for you” – KS “sketches according to your requests done, we will start preparing them and the fitting can be done when you arrive. In any case you want to amend or change something, we can always Skype” – Innai Red. Cool people really..
3 months went by and my sister was dealing with the little little things like wedding cakes and door gifts from Bristol and when there were things that needed her to phone people, our mom and aunty in Malaysia would come in rescue. We returned to Malaysia on 13 December and my sister already showed me the dates that she would need me while on the flight – Man, errands to run almost everyday. And I had a coursework to submit on 9 January. And exams.. 7 and 13 January. What.. I foresaw tough life already that time but I shall share a story about that in the upcoming posts.
For now, I will leave this post with some pictures of my sister’s wedding dress fittings and food tasting sessions.
Food critiques. Was writing my parents’ comments about the choice of food.
Right guy. Biggest food critique. Sat next to him and he took one bite of everything and said ‘Sedap, tak sedap, kurang masin, kurang flavour, keras’. Oh well cousin.
The handsome brothers during the second food tasting.
Bride to be akad nikah + reception dress. First fitting.
Second fitting.
Ballroom wedding dress for the groom’s side of the wedding. You beautiful kak.
